What Is an Eye Emergency?

An eye emergency is any unexpected condition that affects your vision, causes pain, or could damage the eye if left untreated. These issues can range from a scratched cornea to signs of retinal detachment. Some conditions need same-day treatment to protect your sight.

We provide emergency eye care to help you avoid unnecessary trips to the ER.

When Should You Seek Emergency Eye Care?

Some eye symptoms may seem minor but require immediate attention. You should contact us right away if you experience:

  • Sudden loss or change in vision
  • Flashes of light or new floaters
  • Eye pain or pressure
  • A foreign object in the eye
  • Redness, swelling, or discharge
  • Chemical exposure
  • Double vision
  • Eye injury or trauma

If you are unsure whether it’s an emergency, call our office and we will help determine the best next step.

  • Treatment of eye infections or inflammation
  • Flushing of chemical exposures
  • Pain or light sensitivity concerns

Skippack Vision Family Eyecare has an after-hours emergency line for help outside regular hours. Call our main number and follow the prompts to reach our doctor on-call for urgent guidance.

If your emergency is severe or sight-threatening, such as total vision loss or major eye trauma, go directly to the emergency room or call 911.

What to Expect During an Emergency Optometry Visit

We focus on fast, accurate assessments. During your emergency appointment, we may:

  • Ask about your symptoms and timeline
  • Check your vision, pressure, and pupil responses
  • Perform a slit-lamp or retinal exam
  • Remove debris or administer treatment
  • Recommend follow-up or refer to a specialist if needed

Our goal is to ease your worry, protect your vision, and give you a clear path forward.
