What Is IPL Therapy for Dry Eye?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is a treatment that uses controlled light energy to reduce inflammation and improve tear stability, especially in patients with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), the most common cause of dry eye.

We use OptiLight IPL, the first FDA-approved IPL device for the treatment of dry eye disease

Unlike drops that treat surface symptoms, IPL targets the root cause: inflammation and clogged oil glands. Treatment is gentle, performed in-office, and often provides long-term relief with no downtime.

How Does IPL Help Dry Eye Symptoms?

OptiLight IPL delivers quick pulses of light to the skin around the eyes. This treatment:

  • Improves the function of oil glands (meibomian glands)
  • Reduces chronic inflammation in the eyelids
  • Stabilizes the tear film, helping your eyes stay hydrated longer
  • Minimizes redness, irritation, and blurry vision

Most patients complete a series of four sessions spaced two to four weeks apart. Each session takes about 15 to 20 minutes and is done right in our Skippack office.

Who Can Benefit From IPL Dry Eye Therapy?

You may be a good candidate for IPL if:

  • You have meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)
  • You use artificial tears regularly, but still experience symptoms
  • Your eyes feel dry, gritty, or watery, especially on screens or in dry environments
  • Your symptoms interfere with reading, driving, or work
  • Other treatments haven’t worked

We will confirm your diagnosis with a dry eye evaluation before recommending IPL.

What Does IPL Treatment Feel Like?

IPL is well tolerated by most patients. During treatment, you may feel a mild warming sensation or a brief "snap" of light, like a rubber band tap. We use protective eye shields, and treatment is completed in just a few minutes.

There is no downtime, and most people return to work or regular activities right away.

How Long Does It Take to See Results from IPL?

Many patients notice improvement in symptoms after their second or third session, with full benefits appearing after all four treatments. Improvements may include:

  • Less eye redness and burning
  • Fewer drops needed
  • Better screen tolerance
  • Reduced daily irritation
  • Clearer, more stable vision

Follow-up sessions every six to 12 months may be recommended based on your symptoms.
